Green hydrogen from Uruguay

In addition to ramping up its own hydrogen economy, Germany is focusing on importing hydrogen from abroad. In future, hydrogen will be also be imported from Uruguay, where a hydrogen project funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action has started.

On 29 March 2023, during the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue Conference (in German only) of the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Federal Minister Robert Habeck and his counterpart Omar Paganini, Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining for Uruguay, signed an agreement to enter into a Climate and Energy Partnership (in German only).

Through the H2U project, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action is providing €10.1 million of funding to support the development of an international hydrogen economy and the use of German hydrogen technologies outside of Europe.
