Photovoltaics summit: the photovoltaic strategy

At the first photovoltaics summit on 10 March, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, the Länder and the PV sector discussed accelerating the expansion of photovoltaic (PV) installations in Germany. The draft of a PV strategy that was presented there paves the way forward.

Within just a few years, the annual expansion figures in the PV sector are to triple from just over 7 gigawatts (2022) to 22 gigawatts (from 2026). The draft of the PV strategy presented at the PV summit included measures for the greater expansion of ground-mounted installations, photovoltaic installations on rooftops and the simplified use of balcony power plants.

Photovoltaics among the most important future sources of electricity generation

Photovoltaic energy is considered one of the cheapest energy sources and is one of the most important future sources of electricity generation. In this regard, the Renewable Energy Sources Act sets out 215 gigawatts of installed PV capacity in 2030 as an interim target. In 2030, the share of gross electricity consumption covered by renewables is to be 80%. By 2035, Germany intends to be almost greenhouse gas neutral in the electricity sector.

For this to succeed, the PV strategy contains specific measures to help increase public acceptance for the expansion, promote technological development and improve the availability of skilled workers. The legal framework has to be right for this to happen. The draft strategy focuses on secure supply chains and the accelerated expansion of photovoltaics across Europe.
